OGT’s Table Shop Transition

We have recently transitioned our table shop to focus on processing stock tables rather than custom orders. The stock tabletops and legs give our customers a faster way of acquiring these handmade products versus the 2 months turnaround required for custom tables. The focus of the shop today is to supply a quality tabletop and pair it with coordinating legs to make a ready-to-ship option for our customers.

Currently online there are over 60 ready-to-ship farm table options to choose from. If you see a style you like, but it is not the correct size for you, click the Ask a Question link. You can inquire here if we have it in stock at our warehouse or at another location. The best part about our ready-to-ship farm table options is you will receive the exact table pictured.

Styles Available

There is a great selection of our standard farm table and farm tabletops paired with industrial legs. The industrial legs are sold separately in the Industrial Machine Legs category. You can also see very unique styles of tables with exotic woods or resin tops.

Shipping & Delivery

Please click Get a Shipping Quote on the listing page. Fill out the form in full and your quote will be available in several days.

Shipping cost is determined by the type of item purchased, your location, and your preference in shipping speed and carrier.

Freight Shipping

For large items, the quickest (though costliest) shipping option is freight. All items are crated at our onsite freight department in our Scranton, PA location. There is an additional fee for this service that will be factored in your quote. Processing typically takes 1-2 weeks, depending on the item’s size. Scheduling for delivery will be made with the most cost-effective and highly trusted carrier option. Every shipment is insured in case of damage during shipment. For shipments to residential addresses, a lift gate will be automatically included, at an added cost of $50+. Shipments to commercial addresses with loading docks available (without the need for a lift gate) may be exempted from this additional fee, upon request. All crates have Phillips head screws on one side so that they can be easily opened by the customer.

Store Pick Up

You can pick up your order at any of our New York City stores or our Scranton, PA National Warehouse, for Free. Processing time may take up to 1-2 weeks, depending on the original location. We also have a location in Los Angeles where we ship a large freight container several times a year. There is an additional handling charge for this option just contact us for more details.

OGT Delivery

For large items that are not time-sensitive, OGT delivery is an excellent, cost-effective solution. This option can decrease the shipping price by about half that of freight, but in most cases will take longer.  Our trucks are in New York City weekly. We will not be able to guarantee a delivery date, up until the point that the driver calls to set up the appointment. Message for a quote.

Bourbon Bowl Restaurant and Bowling Alley: An Old Favorite Reimagined

A hip, excited reimagining of the bowling alley venue, Bourbon Bowl brings the flavor of vintage retro fun paired with classic new dishes and cocktails to downtown Greensboro, NC. Interior Designer Erica at Assembly Design did an amazing job mixing industrial and retro styles to make a cohesive design.

Bourbon Bowl, a space-born from a junkyard and a gas station, enlivened the downtown scene with classy industrial swag and trendy decor in June 2021. Featuring six bowling lanes, patio seating, Greensboro’s longest bar, and craft food, beer, and cocktails, the venue hosts the traditional dine-snack-bowl idea paired with upscale eats and drinks. The restaurant also serves as an event venue and hosts kids’ parties, along with being the local fun bowling alley hangout with offerings of craft beer, craft cocktails (bourbon is a house specialty), and entrees southern-style like Bourbon BBQ Chicken Kabobs and Brisket Mac.

Many of the vintage-industrial items that grace the restoration space were sourced from Olde Good Things. OGT splices old and new into a custom design, making our architectural salvage and altered antiques stimulating visual and textural contributions for so many redevelopment project clients. Restaurant and retail designers take the cue from the green-repurposed, industrial, and vintage antique movements and invent classic, stylish, contemporary ways to arrange and rearrange collective spaces – often also repurposed.

Oak tabletops with a natural stain, reclaimed and reused from industrial hardwood flooring, make a sharp impression in Bourbon Bowl’s lounge and bowling seating areas. Tabletops were created from OGT stock of reclaimed flooring, along with square industrial table legs.

Diners, drinkers, and bowlers are illuminated by OGT inventory large and double large industrial holophane lights with Art Deco fixtures. Read more about the intriguing history of our stock of holophane lights, reclaimed from factories and industrial settings, initially invented to maximize the dispersion of light. The client also incorporated a NY copper flush mount subway light; original pieces such as this are eye-catching details that give imaginative spaces character.

Frosted chicken wire window glass makes an updated, reinforced replacement for glass windows, along with sets of Poughkeepsie windows. Chicken wire glass is a favorite for strength and durability. Its atmospheric contribution to spaces is the natural filtering of light with varying levels of opacity for privacy. Glass-paneled oak doors add an additional structural touch to the overall metro industrial theme, complementing the raw brick and corrugated aluminum meets colorful vintage tile and decor.

Redevelopment of downtown areas is a major movement nationwide, and OGT continues to delight in serving designers, retail, hospitality, and other industry with reclaimed architectural salvage from historic buildings – a vision that flows along with the contemporary green design and modern industrial chic.

How to Size a Dining Table for Your Space

Often when our customers are shopping for a new table for a space, they will ask us for advice on how to find the perfect size.  This post is meant to be a simple guide to help you in doing just that.  Of course, there are many things to take into consideration, but it is not all that complicated when thinking of a few simple parameters.  First, consider how many will be dining with you, the clearance around the table, and the room’s proportions. One of the main issues is to allow enough room to walk around the table while diners are seated.

Calculate your seat count

Comfortable seating should allow approximately 24 plus inches of table edge per seat, in some cases depending on the size of the individuals at the table, you could slim that down to as low as 21 in. between seats, but we wouldn’t advise any less.  So, a rectangular table 36 to 42 inches wide and 6 feet long can seat six to eight. Round tables up to 60 inches can seat four — or six if the larger table has a pedestal base.

Calculate the table clearance

While recommendations vary, a clearance of 36 to 42 inches from the table edge to a wall or other furniture allows adequate space for seating plus a walkway behind those seated at the table.  Using this guideline, a room 10-by-12-feet long accommodates a table 36 to 42 inches wide and 60 to 72 inches long. The same room could fit a 48-inch round or square table with room for additional furniture along with one of the shorter walls.

Choose table proportion

Another key is to the proportions of your table and the room should be similar. Round and square tables go best with a square or nearly square dining area. Long, narrow dining areas need long, rectangular tables. If you have a large, rectangular room, allow a generous clearance of 48 to 54 inches.

Customer Showcase – Beach Side Boat House

Built in 1926, the boathouse is located on Long Island Sound and sits just steps off of Jordan Cove in Waterford, CT. Owned by a single family until recently, it operated as a functioning nautical storage shed and place for engine repair it’s entire life. Ancient patchwork, an original stone wall, and the occasional hand-scratched date can be found when looking inside. The new owners have worked hard to preserve all the perfect patina while adding touches of their own to make the perfect summer hideout. A hand-carved mermaid bust, vintage GE refrigerator, wooden lobster traps, and a slew of buoys encircle the beautifully crafted cedar and steel counter-height picnic table built by OGT.

The cedar planks used for this table were reclaimed from a 100-year-old water tower in New York City.  As you can imagine the patina from weathering for years atop a high building make for a rich, rustic finish.  More of this cedar is available at this time.  So, if you are looking for a rustic outdoor table with a metal base or one that will be exposed to the elements, contact our table shop for a custom size table quote. From the Floor to the Wall: Repurposing Old Floor Joists

Olde Good Things is known throughout the salvaging, interior design, and preservation communities for our commitment to upcycling, repurposing, and restoring old, neglected, and forgotten items.

We have removed tin ceilings and repurposed them as mirrors and new, colorful ceiling and wall decorations. We’ve salvaged marble, slate, terracotta, and metal from crumbling, demolished, abandoned, or neglected buildings. We’ve given new homes to religious relics, art, statues, mantels, and vintage and antique furniture. We’ve bought and sold at auctions, flea markets, online, and through our 9 locations. A lot is happening with Olde Good Things, but nothing gives us more joy than taking something old and giving it new life.

Repurposed Old Wood

Did you ever look at the rotting, pitted, splintered hardwood floor of an abandoned building and think to yourself, “these would make an amazing table”? No? Well, we did. We’ve taken old, salvaged floor joists and repurposed them into stunning tables using vintage salvaged wood and other industrial metals or wood pieces for table legs. We’ve taken something some would consider the garbage and made it into something people sit around to enjoy their meals, share important news about their day, play board games, or just sit and contentedly sip tea.

 

Scrap Wood Skins

When we make our tables, the carpentry process requires we plane and cut the wood to piece together the tabletops. What happens to the scrap wood that doesn’t go into the tables? Well, we have another story for you. Those scraps of wood that were cut from the beams that were once floor joists were repurposed into something you have to see to believe.

If you’re a Gregular at Gregory’s Coffee in NYC, you’re frequenting a coffee shop that is a buzz for coffee lovers.  Here the customers gaze up at the amazing accent wall…the one covered completely in salvaged, repurposed floor joist wood scraps. Gregory’s Coffee has twelve locations in Manhattan.  Be sure and visit all of them, quite a few have this fascinating wall cover.

Installing Our Signature Industrial Cast Iron Table Legs

At Olde Good Things, we offer a wide range of products in our Altered Antiques line. Many of the products offered in this line, from coffee tables and benches to farm tables, come matched with our Industrial Cast Iron legs. To better help our customers, we have created this easy to follow guide to installing our Industrial Cast Iron Legs on any of our Altered Antiques products or any other project you might have.

Materials and Tools You Will Need:

  • 8 Hex Lag Screws
  • 8 Matching Washers
  • Tape Measurer
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Hex Wrench
  • Table Top
  • Industrial Cast Iron Legs

 

1.

Turn the table upside-down so that the top of the table is facing the floor.

2.

Measure the width of the table and find the center point. Mark the center point with a pencil.

3.

Place the legs on the table and measure in from the sides of the table to the leg mounting plate. Adjust the legs so that the measurement on both sides is equal and that the legs sit in the center of the table.

4.

Double-check the placement of the legs by measuring from the edge of the table to the face of the leg in two different places. This measurement should be the same.

5.

Using the proper drill bit, drill a pilot hole 3/4″ deep for the hex lag screws. To help drill the proper depth, you can mark the drill bit with a piece of masking tape.

6.

Place a washer over the hole in the mounting plate of the leg, lineup the screw and use the proper size bit to screw the hex lag screw into the tabletop. Do this for all four holes and for both legs.

 

To help insure good leg placement on the tables, use the guide below. Find your size tabletop and use the matching leg position, starting from the end of the table inward.

4 ft. top – 8 in.

5 ft. top – 10 in.

6 ft. top – 12 in.

7 ft. top – 14 in.

8 ft. top – 15 in.

9 ft. top – 16 in.

10 ft. top – 16 in.

 

Tables over 10 feet in length require 3 legs for support. The third leg is installed center between the two other legs.

11 ft. top – 18 in.

12 ft. top – 18 in.

13 ft. top – 18 in.

 

Tips:

  • Make sure that the drill bit and screws you use are not longer than the thickness of the tabletop to avoid drilling through the table.
  • Please note that the mounting plate is 1″ thick. This should be take into consideration when purchasing the screws for assembly.

Olde Good Things Thinks “Green” is Beautiful

Going “green” has been a popular theme chanted in Hollywood, schools, and corporate America over the last decade. Recycle, reduce, reuse – and close the loop, right? The truth of the matter is that Olde Good Things has been ahead of the “green” movement since we began back in 1995. We’ve been salvaging, restoring, refurbishing, re-purposing, and reusing architectural goods since the day we opened, and we couldn’t be more proud of the results.

Saving the trees

According to the UN FAO State of the World’s Forests 2007 report, a report written to express the level of global deforestation, “the statistics on global production and consumption of wood fuel (charcoal and other energy uses) round wood (paper and other non-lumber products) and sawn wood (lumber). It estimates global production at 1.7 billion (46%), 1.6 billion (43%) and 421 million (11%) cubic meters.” These numbers are staggering, but when you stop to consider that these numbers are 6 years old (population and industry growth have increased steadily over the last six years), you shouldn’t be surprised that the number of trees cut down every year is nearing the tens of billions.

At Olde Good Things we know that trees are literally the life’s breath of the planet, which is why we go out of our way to include lumber and wood reclamation in our architectural salvage efforts. We salvage wood from old barns, churches, farm houses, and other structures dating back to the late 1800s. This reclaimed wood isn’t used as fuel or ground down into saw dust, it is lovingly and skillfully restored and used to handcraft our more beautiful farm tables. Not only that, much of the wood pieces we salvage from churches and other period structures are restored and reused as architectural touches in many home remodels throughout the US.

When our customers choose to use reclaimed or salvaged wood in their home remodels or interior design projects, they are choosing to bring history, beauty, and an element of “green” into their lives.

Reducing waste

Between the Civil War and WWI, the US became a booming industrial society. Factories, warehouses, and mills popped up all over the face of the nation – much like a rash that had been left unchecked. After WWI many of the factories that were used to build household goods, automobiles, farming equipment, and textiles were put to use building war machines and service goods for the men fighting overseas. While this may sound like a business boom for the industrial complex, it was a shot in the gut. Much of the goods made were manufactured at a fraction of the usual costs, and with so many men fighting in the war, factories were forced to employ women (women were thought to be weaker, slower workers). When the war ended, despite the influx of male workers seeking their old jobs, many of the factories that had employed them had fallen on hard times.

Fast forward to 2013; those factories from the historical Industrial era are still standing – hollow skeletons where an American Dream’s heart and soul used to be. These hulking structures are condemned, dangerous, and marked for demolition. Rather than allow much of the interior industrial goods to fill a landfill, Olde Good Things brings along a squad of skilled salvage experts and we remove the lighting fixtures, the work benches, the doors, the glass, the machine bases, and anything else we can haul away in our trucks.

Industrial chic is a growing trend in interior decorating circles, and Olde Good Things loves providing home owners, designer/decorators, and architectural firms with authentic, industrial items for their design and build projects.
