Antique Neutral Contemporary Marble Fireplace Mantel

This unique tan and gray petite marble mantel was reclaimed by Olde Good Things from a private Manhattan residence on East 67th Street at 5th Avenue. It was carved from a tan marble accented with a mixture of large and random areas of a unique silver colored marble, and designed in the Louis Philippe style, which was popular in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe I (1830-1848).

Composed of three solid pieces of carved marble, the Louis Philippe style is visible through this mantel's simple and restrained design. The mantel lacks elaborate ornamentation, favoring clean lines and a utilitarian elegance. In addition, you will notice that the two corbel shaped legs have a subtle inward curve, a hallmark of Louis Philippe design, which often bridges the decorative flair of earlier styles with the sobriety of later 19th century tastes. Finally, the single block of marble for the horizontal cross header and connected shelf has a simple yet defined molding along the shelf edge, typical of the style's understated refinement.

This piece was removed in good condition with a small chip visible at the bottom of the header, just above the firebox opening, as well as with some minor wear from age and use. The hearthstone and white marble trim around the firebox are not included.
