This is a late 1800’s large scale carved, stained, and lacquered French limestone mantel. It was reclaimed from a prominent private residence on the upper West side of Manhattan. Floral patterns, lions, centaur type figures, and a unique helmeted face at the center of the main horizontal panel make up the design of this mantel. There are other multiple carved details, including egg and dart, shells, and dental molding below the mantel shelf. The supporting side pieces are large classic corbels with carved lion faces, and lion claw feet at the base. This was removed in very good to excellent condition with no breaks.
