Wooden base table top 1880s Obraz Zemekoule Globe. This unusual globe, whose name translates to “Image of the Earth”, features a large region in Europe that appears to be the Austro-Hungarian Empire, while Germany and Italy are shown as unified countries. Hawaii is still named as the Sandwich Islands, and the southern tip of Africa is called “Kapsko” rather than the “Union of South Africa”. The globe’s place names are in Czech, and is constructed from twelve paper gores. The 10 in. sphere sits offset on a 6.5 in. turned, ebony colored wooden stem and is mounted on a 7 in. ebony wood base. Total height is 17.5 in. Made in Rostok by Felkl & Son, a firm that produced globes in 17 languages, 9 sizes and 10 different designs from 1855 to 1950.
