Heavily Carved Victorian Arched Statuary Marble Mantel

$36,000.00

SKU: P262876 Categories: , ,

This rare white statuary marble mantel originates from the private collection of a Long Island resident who reported that this piece was in the possession of President James Monroe during his time in New York City. No surprise as this stunning piece from the early 1800s is adorned with intricate Baroque spandrels featuring elegantly carved rosebud florals and leaves. The center arch is adorned with ornate rope and ribbon detailing, while the jambs feature stately acanthus leaf corbels. Statuary marble is native to the Carrara upper mountainous regions of Italy and characterized by its extremely bright white background striking a gorgeous contrast from its veining. Fashioned from the same marble classic sculptors used to create masterpieces, this mantel boasts a remarkable level of preservation, maintaining its excellent condition. The mantel shelf had two round holes to accommodate lamps at some point in its history, which have since been repaired. Some slight discoloration remains at these repair points, which is noted in the photos. Please allow 2-4 weeks for processing.
