Waldorf Astoria Sienna Marble Bollection Mantel

$9,600

This sienna marble Bollection mantel was salvaged from the Waldorf Astoria. Carved out of very yellow sienna marble with tan veining, Bollection molding was invented by the British architect Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723), who is responsible for establishing the English Baroque architectural style in England, and perhaps more importantly, laying the groundwork for the Neo classicism of the Georgian period that followed. Georgian style architecture and design emphasizes symmetry, borrowing heavy influence from the classical architecture of Greece and Rome, with adherence to the classic sense of proportion playing an important role. True to this, the design of Bollection molding creates a seamless and visually appealing transition between surfaces of differing levels, and this design was ported over to other architectural pieces, like this mantel.

This antique mantel was one of several pieces imported from Europe to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, which opened on October 1, 1931. This mantel is original to Room 39R. A Waldorf Astoria authenticity card is included with your purchase.
Pictured still installed at the Waldorf Astoria, the black marble hearth is included, however the horizontal section of this mantel is broken in two. Located at our Scranton Warehouse, please allow 3-4 weeks for processing.
