Waldorf Astoria Regency Breche Marble Mantel

$11,500

This small scale English Regency style mantel is carved from warm white marble inlaid with stunning Breccia Violetta marble. This incredibly high contrast Breccia Violetta inlay runs the length of the jambs and across the apron, framing three cherub motifs carved in white. The center motif depicts a dog and two cherubs reading in a sunken relief. It is complemented by two oval cherub corner motifs, each playing a miniature harp and a pair of symbols above the jambs. The edges of the narrow shelf are modestly carved with a single groove. This simple detail is repeated along the face of all the trim moldings, with the exception of the trim pieces below the corner motifs.

This antique mantel was one of several pieces imported from Europe to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, which opened on October 1, 1931. This mantel is original to Suite F on the 11th floor. The beautifully worn crema marfil marble hearth is included. A Waldorf Astoria authenticity card is included with your purchase.

Pictured still installed at the Waldorf Astoria, this mantel is now located at our Scranton Warehouse for repair. The return plate is broken in two places, and there is a chip missing on the horizontal trim. As seen in the photos, this piece was installed over brick columns that were at the rear of the fireplace in the Waldorf. As such, this piece has an extended shelf which is 11.75 in. deep, and we will cut this to the proper size (about 6 in. deep) prior to delivery, and if desired, we can cut the shelf to the proper size of 52 in. wide x 6 in. deep as well. Please allow 4-6 weeks for repairs.
