Waldorf Astoria Louis XVI Regency Carved Marble Mantel
$12,800
This stunning mantel is carved from deep violet marble with flecks of white, aubergine, and gold ochre veining. Long rectangles featuring raised panels rising from a sunken relief, and bordered by a narrow frame, combine with uniquely carved motifs to decorate the apron. The motifs are a combination of what appears to be a coat of arms at the center, and mixed with workman's tools or instruments in the corner motifs. Detailed cabled flutings run down the jambs.
An early to mid 19th century Louis XVI style piece, this piece epitomizes "Louis Seize", a style of architecture, furniture, decoration, and art just before the French Revolution. Designs in this style hearkened back to the purity and grandeur of the art of the Ancient Greeks. As such, this hand carved piece has simple, clean lines, allowing this mantel's luxe veining to resonate.
This antique mantel was one of several pieces imported from Europe to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, which opened on October 1, 1931. This mantel is original to the 28th floor of the Towers, specifically the M Suite. The original hearth is not included. A Waldorf Astoria authenticity card is included with your purchase.
