Waldorf Astoria English Regency Tan & Green Marble Mantel

This 19th century English Regency style mantel is carved from white statuary marble with gray veining and inlaid with tan marble with green veining. In the center of the apron is a rectangular white marble motif of two cherubs positioned over an urn. Above each plinth are two complementary white marble motifs, each depicting a Greek Satyr. Satyrs were companions of Dionysus, the god of wine and ecstasy, and symbolized the love of music, dance, and the pursuit of pleasure. These three carvings are prominently completed in white marble, while the tan marble inlay completes the face of the apron and legs for contrast. Each inlay is framed by white marble fluting, and the statuary marble tiered shelf is finished with a modest groove.

This antique mantel was one of several pieces imported from Europe to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, which opened on October 1, 1931. This mantel is original to the sixth floor hallway. A Waldorf Astoria authenticity card is included with your purchase.
