Waldorf Astoria English Regency Statuary Marble Green Mantel
$12,000
This small scale English Regency style mantel was taken out of the Waldorf Astoria. It is carved from statuary marble and inlaid with gray green Cipollino Ondulato Verde with bold white linear veining. Statuary marble motifs depicting a single cherub collecting wood sit at each corner above each jamb, while in the center motif, the two cherubs meet over an open fire. The Cipollino Ondulato inlay is featured on the apron and jambs. In each, it is framed with horizontal flutings. The edges of the narrow shelf are modestly carved with a single groove.
Quarried primarily in Greece, "Cipollino" means "little onion" in Italian, named after the marbles layered appearance. This marble was prized in ancient Rome and used in the Pantheon, the Baths of Caracalla, and Hadrians Villa. During the Renaissance, it was used to build ornate fireplaces in France and England. Considered a niche marble, today it is quarried in limited quantities.
This antique mantel was one of several pieces imported from Europe to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, which opened on October 1, 1931. This mantel is original to Suite K on the 14th floor. A Waldorf Astoria authenticity card is included with your purchase. Pictured still installed at the Waldorf Astoria, kindly confirm the condition before purchasing. Located at our Scranton Warehouse, please allow 3-4 weeks for processing.
