Waldorf Astoria English Regency Mantel with Inset Fossil Marble

$10,000

This small scale English Regency style mantel is carved from warm white marble, inlaid with a mixed, unique brown colored marble. This unique brown marble inlay runs the length of the jambs and across the apron, framing three cherub motifs carved in white. The center motif depicts two cherubs celebrating the harvest in a sunken relief. It is complemented by oval singular cherub motifs above the jambs that are carved in the same manner. The edges of the narrow shelf are modestly carved with a single groove. This simple detail is repeated along the face of all the trim moldings, with the exception of the trim pieces below the corner motifs. The original shelf of the mantel has been altered. An additional piece of Calcutta Gold marble, with an inverted flat ogee detail, has been laminated to the top of the original shelf. The modest style of this mantel is completed with a single groove carved along the front edge of the trim moldings.

This antique mantel was one of several pieces imported from Europe to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, which opened on October 1, 1931. This mantel is original to Suite R on the 13th floor of the hotel. The original hearth is not included, and a Waldorf Astoria authenticity card is included with your purchase.

Pictured still installed at the Waldorf Astoria, kindly request the reclaimed condition before purchasing. Located at our Scranton Warehouse, please allow 3-4 weeks for processing.
