Waldorf Astoria Early 19th Century English Regency Marble Mantel

This English Regency style mantel is carved from statuary marble and inlaid with oxblood marble with white and slate gray marbling. In the center of the apron is a motif featuring a lifelike carving of a maiden seated, her right arm raised and her robe flowing. Above each jamb are complementary motifs, a single cherub with a paddle to the left, and another blowing a horn to the right. The oxblood marble inlay runs across the apron and down each leg, framed by statuary marble fluting. The shelf is two-tiered and carved with a single groove.

This antique mantel was one of several pieces imported from Europe to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, which opened on October 1, 1931. This mantel is original to Suite R on the 9th floor. A Waldorf Astoria authenticity card is included with your purchase.
