Rococo Statuary Marble White Mantel with Elegant Carvings

This exceptional mantel was reclaimed during the restoration of James Madison's Montpelier house.

This piece epitomizes the Rococo style, which emphasized fantasy, naturalism, and sensuality. Carved from white statuary marble, the center of the mantel features a stylized cartouche, or crest, surrounded by cascading shell, scroll, and leaf forms. The legs of the mantel curve in exaggerated S shapes, mimicking the cabriole leg seen in furniture of the period. These are richly adorned with scrolling foliage, shell like forms, and sculptural details that appear to spill and unfurl organically. The apron and adjacent corners are each carved from solid blocks of statuary marble. The vertical supports are fashioned from two joined sections.

The carved marble pieces, being well preserved, have been cleaned and are in very good to excellent condition. The original shelf is not available; however, a large antique statuary marble shelf is available for carving as a replacement. Presently, this mantel is offered as is.
