19th Century Victorian Marble Mantel with Figural & Foliage

This elaborately carved antique marble mantel was reclaimed from a residential building on 5th avenue in NYC's Flat Iron District. This stunning piece reflects elements of the French Renaissance Revival or Neo Renaissance style, known for its romanticized interpretation of classical motifs, narrative carving, and sculptural detailing.

Likely from the mid to late 19th century, on both sides of the firebox opening, there are full length carved figures in classical or romantic attire, one is balancing a vessel filled with grapes on her head, while the other transports grapes on a branch over her shoulder. These likely symbolize virtues, muses, or allegorical figures. The spandrels and upper frieze are richly decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves, floral motifs, and grape clusters, classic Renaissance iconography. The over mantel features a raised oval medallion or cartouche at the center, bordered by scrollwork and classical flourishes. The sides of the mantel feature rounded pilasters with panel detailing at the base and a double tiered plinth structure, grounding the otherwise highly decorative piece. The arched opening is a hallmark of Renaissance Revival mantels, conveying a sense of grandeur and softened formality.

Upon observation, the detailing suggests this could have been custom commissioned for a high status home or public interior, likely French or Northern European. The storytelling reliefs and lush ornamentation are characteristic of mantels made during the Second Empire period in France or similar movements elsewhere in Europe.

The center oval cartouche is not original. We have a stunning antique time appropriate shelf available, which will be used to replace the shelf in this photo upon purchase. Some restoration has been completed, and further restoration can be included if desired. The original hearth is no longer available.
