1880s Hand Carved Gothic Carrara Marble Fireplace Mantel

This late 1800s Gothic style fireplace mantel is made of carved gray Carrara marble that has been painted tan to appear as if this piece is actually made of wood. In the center of the apron, a face sits inside a medallion, flanked to the left and right by griffons. Above each jamb is a floral motif in a square frame. Directly below, an urn filled with floral carvings sits above each plinth, and these carvings climb toward a floral motif at the top. The tiered marble shelf is underscored by egg and dart detail.

It was reclaimed from a private residence at 132 East 71st Street, Manhattan. The mantel is in very good condition with no breaks. The actual color of the marble can be seen in a small unpainted area at the top of the right side panel. The fire screen is not included.
