Waldorf Astoria Louis XVI Regency Carved Toffee Marble Mantel

$8,400

SOLD

This Louis XVI Regency style mantel is carved out of toffee marble with spectacular burgundy, white, and chocolate veining. Hand carved floral motifs sit above jambs embellished with deeply carved fluting, which becomes cabled above the plinth. A tiered frame containing six horizontal marble rods bound by reed rope runs the length of the apron. In the center sits the third floral motif, carved in the shape of a diamond. This piece epitomizes "Louis Seize", a style of architecture, furniture, decoration, and art just before the French Revolution. Designs in this style hearkened back to the purity and grandeur of the art of the Ancient Greeks.

This antique mantel was one of several pieces imported from Europe to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, which opened on October 1, 1931. This mantel is original to Suite M on the 11th floor. A Waldorf Astoria authenticity card is included with your purchase.
Pictured still installed at the Waldorf Astoria, the mantel pieces are in very good to excellent condition, having some wear consistent with their age. A matching original hearth is included. A minor repair of a missing corner at the front of the hearth is necessary. Located at our Scranton Warehouse, please allow 3-4 weeks for processing.
