Waldorf Astoria Louis XV French Rococo Brown Marble Mantel

This French Rococo style mantel is carved from warm russet marble with gray and white veining. The entire piece is carved in a flowing manner, starting with a curved apron highlighted with an asymmetric shell motif at its center. Spreading out from the center motif are marble frames that follow and highlight the curves in design and lead to the top of angled jambs. Down each jamb, the pattern of frames repeats, organic and more shield like in shape than rectangular. The shelf is finished with a rounded edge.

French Rococo, also known as Rocaille style, appeared in Paris during the reign of Louis XV, and flourished between about 1723 and 1759. The style was used particularly in salons, a new style of room designed to impress and entertain guests. This design approach can be characterized by its light, airy, and decorative aesthetic, and asymmetrical designs, as epitomized by the carving in the center of this mantel's apron.

This antique mantel was one of several pieces imported from Europe to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, which opened on October 1, 1931. This mantel is original to room 30A. A Waldorf Astoria authenticity card is included with your purchase.
