Waldorf Astoria Gray & White Louis XV Petite Marble Mantel
$9,600
This especially petite mantel is carved from gray green marble with white marble accents. The narrow shelf begins with a white marble base and rises in expanding tiers. Two sections of white marble are inlaid into the apron, each carved with horizontal channels and framed with bead detail. Simple blocks of gray and white marble sit in the center of the apron and in each corner. The same white marble inlay runs the length of each leg, featuring five carved channels running perpendicular to the floor.
Carved in the Louis XVI style, this piece epitomizes "Louis Seize", a style of architecture, furniture, decoration, and art just before the French Revolution. Designs in this style hearkened back to the purity and grandeur of the art of the Ancient Greeks. As such, this hand carved piece has simple, clean lines, allowing the naturally luxe white and gray veined marble to resonate. This antique mantel was one of several pieces imported from Europe to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, which opened on October 1, 1931. This mantel is original to room 27K. A Waldorf Astoria authenticity card is included with your purchase.
Pictured still installed at the Waldorf Astoria, the mantel is missing some of the fine beaded trim running along the inlaid white marble. Also, apparently missing are unknown corner motifs from the face of the corner plaques, as well as a piece of white trim below the plaque on the left side. The mantel is sold as is or with partial restoration. Please request details.
