1853 Arched White Floral Carved Statuary Marble Mantel

$18,000.00

SOLD

This arched white statuary marble mantel with beautiful floral carvings was reclaimed from a house on St. Luke’s Place in New York City. Preservationist and pioneering member of the early New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, Evelyn G. Haynes, noted in a report that the houses of St. Luke’s Place “are probably the last continuous row of houses of their period in Manhattan.” Built in 1851-1852, these houses were planned together based on a master design, and soon became home to poets, writers, and artists such as Sherwood Anderson, Theodore Dreiser, Arthur Laurents, Paul Cadmus, and "Beau James" Jimmy Walker. An original design to the homes in that particular area, multiple houses on this street had the same style of mantel. Olde Good Things had the privilege of removing matching mantels over a period of years from three of the houses on the block. This mantel is in very good condition with wear consistent with its age. The hearth pictured here is not included, however we were able to salvage the iron surround. Please note the arched marble surround at the firebox has smoke damage and will need to be replaced or eliminated. Surface cleaning and minor restoration are included with your purchase. Please allow 3-4 weeks for processing.
